3 signs your Pokemon card is worth real money

Before you dig for a scanner or list a card, check for these three signals. If one is present, run the card through the checker above.

  1. Sign 1

It has a 1st Edition or Shadowless stamp

Cards from 1999 and 2000 with a 1st Edition stamp on the left side, or that lack the drop shadow behind the artwork (shadowless), are the earliest print runs. A 1st Edition Base Set Charizard sells for $10,000 raw and over $400,000 as a PSA 10. Even commons from these sets sell for real money.

  2. Sign 2

It is a holo, reverse holo, or full art

Any card with a shiny foil pattern is worth more than a plain card from the same set. Holos and reverse holos hold value across every era. Full-art, alt-art, secret-rare, and hyper-rare cards from Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet often sell for $100 to $2,000 in Near Mint condition.

  3. Sign 3

It is from a set the market cares about

Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Neo Genesis, and the WOTC era are always in demand. Evolving Skies (Umbreon VMAX Alt), Crown Zenith (Giratina V Alt), Prismatic Evolutions (Umbreon ex), and 151 are the modern hot sets. Cards from these sets trade hands weekly and clear at auction.

How to know if your Pokemon cards are worth selling

Sitting on an old binder or a shoebox? Work through these three steps before you post anything for sale.

  1. 1

    Sort by set and year

Cards from 1999 through 2001 are almost always worth checking. Sword and Shield (2020 onwards) and Scarlet and Violet (2023 onwards) also have moving cards. Cards from 2003 to 2019 are hit or miss, so identify the set code first.

  2. 2

Flag every holo and full art

Holos, reverse holos, full arts, alt arts, and any card with a special-illustration or hyper-rare marker are your candidates. Set the plain commons and uncommons aside unless they are from the WOTC era.

  3. 3

    Look up each candidate above

Type the Pokemon name plus the card number into the search box. The result shows the raw price, PSA 10 price, and the last real eBay sale. Anything over $10 is worth listing. Anything over $100 is worth grading before selling.

Pokemon card worth FAQ

  • How can I check what my Pokemon card is worth?
Type the Pokemon name and the set number into the search box above. Swoop TCG returns the current market price, the latest PSA 10 sold price, and recent eBay sales in under a second. No account, no fee.
  • How do I look up a Pokemon card price by number?
Every card has a number printed at the bottom, usually in the format 4/102 or SV10-231. Type that number, or the Pokemon name plus the number, into the search above. Swoop TCG matches on both name and card ID.
  • Which Pokemon cards are worth the most money?
The 1999 Base Set Charizard, 1st Edition Gengar, Trophy Pikachu, Illustrator Pikachu, and the Gold Star cards from the EX era are among the highest-worth Pokemon cards on the market. See the ranked list on this page for real current values.
  • Are my old Pokemon cards worth anything?
If they are from 1999 to 2001 (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Neo), almost certainly yes. Holos from these sets sell for $30 to $500. First edition holos sell for $200 to $10,000. Even Near Mint commons from these sets sell for $2 to $10 each.
  • How much is a Charizard card worth?
There are over 150 Charizard printings. A 1999 Base Set holo Charizard is worth around $800 raw and $12,000 PSA 10. A modern Charizard ex from Obsidian Flames is worth around $80. Search 'Charizard' plus the card number above for your exact copy.
  • Are Pokemon cards from the 2000s worth anything?
The EX era from 2003 to 2007 has strong worth on Gold Stars and holos. The Diamond and Pearl era from 2007 to 2011 is mostly low worth outside of Lv. X cards. Black and White from 2011 to 2013 has a few valuable full arts. Always search the exact card to be sure.
  • How can I check the worth of a card without knowing the set?
Search by Pokemon name alone in the box above. Swoop TCG returns every printing sorted by market price so you can match your card to a picture. Once you find the visual match, tap through for full worth details.
  • Do Pokemon cards go up in worth over time?
Vintage cards from 1999 to 2001 have generally gone up in worth every year since 2018. Modern cards depend on print run and reprint risk. Special-illustration and alt-art hits from small sets often appreciate. Base commons from large modern sets do not.
