To make that back, your PSA 10 sale needs to clear the raw price plus the fee by at least 1.5 times. This guide breaks down the actual break-even math with real September 2026 sold-price data and a decision matrix for every raw-value tier.
Break-even math for Pokemon card grading in 2026
The formula is straightforward: expected profit equals the weighted graded value minus the raw value minus fees. The weighted graded value is the sum of each possible grade times its probability. If the raw price is $200, the PSA 10 sale is $1,000 with a 25 percent chance, the PSA 9 sale is $400 with a 60 percent chance, and the PSA 8 sale is $180 with a 15 percent chance, then:
Weighted graded value = ($1,000 × 0.25) + ($400 × 0.60) + ($180 × 0.15) = $250 + $240 + $27 = $517.
Subtract $200 raw. Subtract $95 in fees and shipping. Profit is $222. Since raw was $200, net return is 111 percent. Grade.
Now try the same math with a raw price of $200 but PSA 10 sale of $500 and PSA 9 sale of $250. Weighted graded value = ($500 × 0.25) + ($250 × 0.60) + ($150 × 0.15) = $297. Subtract $200 raw. Subtract $95 fees. Profit is $2. Sell raw.
The formula is not complicated. The hard part is estimating the probabilities. Everyone overestimates their PSA 10 hit rate. Assume you are 5 percentage points lower than you think you are. If the math still works with the pessimistic estimate, grade the card.

The modern versus vintage grading rule
Vintage cards (1999 to 2003): Grade almost all Near Mint copies worth $150+ raw. The 5 to 8 times multiplier from PSA 9 to PSA 10 covers grading fees several times over even at a 10 percent PSA 10 pass rate. Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, and Neo era holos in NM condition are the sweet spot.
Modern chase cards ($500+ raw): Grade only with confidence. If you can loupe the centering and see 55/45 or better, grade. If centering is off, sell raw. The 1.8 to 3.7 times modern multiplier means a PSA 9 return often puts you underwater against raw plus fee.
Modern budget cards ($100 to $500 raw): Do the expected value math per card. If PSA 10 sells for more than 5 times raw, the math usually works. Below that, sell raw.
Cards under $50 raw: Do not grade. Even a successful PSA 10 grade rarely covers fees at the low end. The one exception is a card with 10 times+ raw multiplier where a PSA 10 sells for $500+ (some sealed-era Ex cards). Rare case.
Bulk grading services (CGC Economy at $17): Changes the math significantly. Cards worth $50 to $100 raw start to work at bulk fees. If you have a stack of 25 modern chases and they collectively pencil out at bulk rates, submit together.
The 30 percent rule of grading returns
Roughly 30 percent of Pokemon cards submitted for grading come back at grade 7 or 8. This is the number nobody wants to internalize: your card is now publicly anchored at a value substantially below what you paid to grade it, and cracking the slab to re-submit takes an additional photo hit.
The 30 percent figure includes cards that looked pristine to the naked eye. Print defects that PSA catches under 10x magnification (surface waves on holos, foil scratches, edge whitening invisible in room light) push otherwise Near Mint cards down two full grades regularly. This is the actual downside risk of grading.
The lesson is not to skip grading. The lesson is to grade confidently. Loupe the card yourself before you submit. Check centering front-and-back against a lamp. Reject any card where you can find a defect under angled light. If the card passes your own audit, PSA will usually agree. If you have to talk yourself into the submission, PSA will find what you missed.
